LiDAR Drone Mapping in Jordan: When ±2 cm Accuracy Matters

LiDAR drone mapping uses a drone-mounted laser scanner to build a survey-grade 3D point cloud of any terrain, vegetation or structure to ±2 cm accuracy — faster, safer and cheaper than ground survey crews. In Jordan it is the right choice for vegetated terrain, quarry stockpiles, road corridors, powerline rights-of-way, and any project where photogrammetry cannot see the ground.

How LiDAR is different from photogrammetry

Photogrammetry stitches overlapping photos into a 3D model — fine for bare ground and roofs, but it cannot see through trees, weeds or shadow. LiDAR fires hundreds of thousands of laser pulses per second; many of them slip between leaves and branches and hit the ground itself. The result: a true bare-earth surface plus a separate vegetation layer, both georeferenced.

Aspect LiDAR Photogrammetry
Sees through vegetation Yes No
Accuracy ±2 cm ±3–10 cm
Works in low light Yes No
Texture / colour Optional fused Native
Cost Higher Lower
Best for Forest, quarry, corridor, urban Bare ground, roofs, simple sites

Where LiDAR wins in Jordan

  • Olive groves and forestry — Jerash and Ajloun terrain under canopy.
  • Quarries and stockpiles — volume measurement at Ma’an phosphate and Aqaba cement plants.
  • Road and rail corridors — Amman ring road, Dead Sea highway, future rail alignments.
  • Powerline corridors — clearance vegetation surveys for NEPCO.
  • Urban areas — Amman building heights, façades, infrastructure clashes.
  • Archaeology — bare-earth detection of structures hidden under vegetation around Petra and Umm Qais.

What you get in the deliverable

  1. Classified LAS/LAZ point cloud (ground, vegetation, building, noise).
  2. Bare-earth DTM (Digital Terrain Model) and DSM (Digital Surface Model) GeoTIFFs.
  3. Contour lines at the requested interval (0.5 m typical).
  4. Volumetrics, cross-sections, longitudinal profiles on request.
  5. QA report with control-point residuals and accuracy statement.

How long does it take?

Field acquisition is fast — a 1 km² site is flown in 60–90 minutes. Processing (point cloud generation, classification, deliverables) usually takes 3–5 working days for a clean dataset; complex urban or vegetated sites take longer because manual classification QA is required.

Cost in Jordan (indicative)

Indicative starting prices: small sites (< 10 ha) from 1,500 JOD; medium corridor (1–5 km) from 3,000 JOD; large area (> 1 km²) quoted per km². Add-ons: classified vegetation layer, archaeological detection, multi-epoch change detection. All include ground control survey and deliverable QA.

Why Loyalty Drones

We operate Matrice-class drones with survey-grade LiDAR payloads, run our own ground control with RTK GNSS, and deliver point clouds in the formats your engineering team already uses (LAS, LAZ, E57, DXF, DWG). Related services: drone surveying & mapping and construction drone services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LiDAR overkill for a simple site survey?

If the ground is bare and the accuracy needed is ±5 cm, photogrammetry is usually cheaper. LiDAR is justified when vegetation, accuracy or low-light conditions matter.

How accurate is drone LiDAR vs a total station?

Drone LiDAR achieves ±2 cm with RTK control — close to total station accuracy for natural terrain, while covering area 50–100 times faster.

Can LiDAR detect underground structures?

No. LiDAR is line-of-sight from the air; it maps the visible surface (including bare earth under vegetation), but it does not penetrate solid ground.

What format does the deliverable come in?

LAS/LAZ point cloud as standard; we also export DTM/DSM GeoTIFFs, contours (DWG/DXF), and cross-sections on request.
